It took a nearly a month to recover from my injury. And it had been far too long since I last visited Beth and Clay.

“Hey, long time no see.” Clay greeted me at the door with a hug.

“Yeah, sorry. I’ve been busy,” I smiled.

We walked into the house. I put my helmet down on the kitchen table, and then gave Beth a hug.

“You look good,” she commented.

“Thanks, I’m doing well.”

“How are you settling in your new place?” she asked.

“Fine. I still haven’t finished unpacking yet, though,” I lied.

It had been nearly two weeks since I’d been back to my own pad. I lived at Buzz’s and I didn’t use my place much. Most of my clothes were at his apartment.

“So, what you been up to?” Clay asked, as he offered me a rolled joint.

“Been gigging most nights and then spend my day working on articles.” I hated lying to them, and hoped they wouldn’t see through me. “How’s work?” I asked him.

“Busy.” He replied, gazing intently at me.

“What?”

“I don’t know - you seem different.”

“Nah,” I said, and nudged him with my shoulder, “I ain’t changed. Home grown?” I asked, passing the joint to Beth.

“Of course,” she smiled.

I didn’t like the way Clay was trying to read me.

“You staying for dinner?” he asked, his eyes still straining to see something that wasn’t there.

I knew I needed to be careful what I said and how I acted around him. He was a smart guy.

“Sure. Umm - talking about dinner. What you guys doing next Friday evening?”

“Got nothing planned why?” Clay asked, as he exhaled the smoke.

“I thought it was time I invited you both for dinner, at my place.”

“You cook?” Beth laughed.

“Hey, I have to look after myself now. I clean, wash, and cook thank you very much. You’ll see,” I grinned. “So, Friday at eight, yeah?”

“Sounds great,” Clay said, with a tight smile.

I knew the only way I would be able to get through the afternoon without causing any more suspicion to Beth and Clay was if I was stoned. So I did just that. They didn’t mention about my intake or my refusal to accept any pills. Once I relaxed and dropped my guard, I was back to my usual quirky self.

When I told Buzz I wouldn’t be back that Friday night, he never questioned me. He’d never taken me for granted.

Once Clay and Beth knew where I was living, I couldn’t risk him finding out, in case one of them came around unexpectedly. Buzz knew I had my own place, but as we were comfortable living at his, he never once mentioned about staying over at mine.

Living the lie was killing me. I was lying to my family, my friends, my lover, and myself. It was tearing me apart. And I knew it couldn’t go on.

I took my rucksack, which was stuffed with notebooks and paper, out of the bedroom cupboard where it was hidden. It was a ritual I did every two days. Not wanting Buzz to suddenly
